The crown jewel of a Francophone education — a reciprocal exchange with Caen, Normandy that brings years of French immersion to life.
The crown jewel of our global education program is our 7th and 8th grade exchange to France. For Francophone students, this capstone event is a challenge to use skills they have learned and gives meaning to 7+ years of French immersion education.
The program is fully reciprocal. Every other winter, middle school students from Caen will travel to Oakland to stay with Francophone families. The following month, our students travel to Caen — living with a host family and navigating daily life in French.
Francophone intends the Cultural Exchange Program to occur every other year. Our 5th and 6th graders are already motivated to learn French in preparation for their trip in 2028.
Caen is a historic city in Normandy, founded by William the Conqueror in the 11th century — and famous for its decisive role in D-Day and the liberation of Europe.
